This is a memorial park that is dedicated to the Great Irish Hunger, also called the Irish Potato Famine, which took place between 1845 and 1852. This was a period of starvation during which about 1 million people died and during which more than 1 million people fled Ireland.
Because of this event, the total population of Ireland declined by about 25%.
The memorial also has as its goal to raise awareness of this event.
During the famine, close to 1 million Irish people came to New York City’s port, and eventually about one-third of NYC’s population consisted of Irish-born citizens.
